Saskia Pfaeltzer

Saskia Pfaeltzer’s bronze statues have an unmistakable personal signature. The elegant, rhythmical shapes, semi abstract limbs and slightly unburnished surfaces are typical characteristics of this artist.

We see spirited people in bronze, strong carriers, proud amazons and slender dancers, mostly from exotic origin. Indeed, Pfaeltzer loves everything which is exotic and self-assured about people, in dance, music and theatre. Between the lines of the sculpture-making we can discern the abstract terms of where the essence of her work lies. She seeks the feast that the soul carries; her statues form one long procession, where people set their fantasies free in their search for the spiritual.

It is no coincidence that Ms. Pfaeltzer settled down in the 1990s in catholic Saint Maarten, where she started years later a new atelier in Saint Eustatius. On this island, where belief and superstition are the ingredients that make a rich, exotic popular culture, she found the environment in which her authentic artistry could flourish.

Saskia Pfaeltzer (Hilversum, 1955) graduated in 1980 from the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam under the direction of Piet Esser, Paul Grégoire en Theresia van der Pant. Since then a great number of exhibitions in the Netherlands and abroad followed, as well as numerous honorably assignments. Her statues have been made part of the collections of the ING Bank, Unilever, Hudig Langevelt, Volmac, Luchthaven St. Maarten, and museum Van Oss, amongst other. The municipalities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Helmond have also acquired her statues.
